Providing you with quality lifelong learning opportunities is our priority. Virginia Nurses Association is accredited as an Approver of Nursing Continuing Professional Development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC's) Commission on Accreditation. We review and approve quality educational nursing programs for organizations large and small throughout Virginia and the nation.

Your educational activity could be approved to award nursing contact hours if it meets the definition of Continuing Nursing Education. Continuing nursing education (CNE) is: "Those learning activities intended to build upon the educational and experiential bases of the professional RN for the enhancement of practice, education, administration, research, or theory development, to the end of improving the health of the public and RNs’ pursuit of their professional career goals" (2015 ANCC Primary Accreditation Application Manual for Providers and Approvers).

Individual Educational Activities must be designed to address a gap in knowledge, skills and/or practice for a specific target audience. All ANCC Educational Design Criteria for continuing nursing education activities must be addressed.

In order to submit an application, your planning committee must include a Nurse Planner and a Content Expert. The Nurse Planner is required to be an RN with a baccalaureate degree or higher and a current unrestricted nursing license. The Nurse Planner must be actively involved in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of your educational activity and is responsible for ensuring adherence to the ANCC Educational Design Criteria. VNA directly communicates with the Nurse Planner in regards to all elements of your application.

The first step in the application process is to complete our Eligibility Assessment Form.

Next you will complete and submit your Individual Activity Application. We request that you submit your completed application and application fees at least 8 weeks prior to the start of your activity.

After your completed application and payment are received, reviewers from VNA's Continuing Education Approval Committee will review the application and provide feedback according to ANCC criteria. Once you successfully satisfy any requests for revisions cited by reviewers, your activity will be approved.

Instructions on the ANCC educational design process are provided throughout the application.

A brief recording on the Standards for the Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education can be located within in the Individual Activity Application. This recording is a supplemental resource to ensure compliance with the Standards as your planning team completes the application process.

Individual Activity Application Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) can be found here!

Please see our chart of fees to calculate your application fee. Application fees are for the review of the individual activity and are non-refundable once the application has been submitted.

For payment only: You will need to round up if your number of contact hours is not a whole number. For example, to calculate the fees for 3.25 hours, you would round up to 4 hours.

Please complete and submit the Individual Educational Activity Application Form via our online submission portal. Please do not use Internet Explorer  to download these files.
