Mary Eliza Mahoney: An Ode to Nursing History

Join us for a celebration of trailblazers who shaped the nursing profession. This special event honors the legacy of Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first Black professionally trained nurse in the United States, and spotlights the profound contributions Black nurses have made to healthcare and society throughout history. We will be joined by Kali Holloway, columnist and author of the groundbreaking National Geographic piece on Mary Mahoney titled “The woman who defied the odds as the first Black nurse in the U.S.”, for a conversation on her legacy and enduring impact. We will also hear from Claire Li and Trey Azara, New Jersey high school sophomores and National History Day regional champions and state qualifiers who will be joined by their advisor, Christy Marrella-Davis. Their passion for breakthroughs in science led to the development of a research project and website documenting the story of the Black Angels and their pivotal role in the fight against tuberculosis. Their work is a testament to how these stories continue to inspire and resonate across generations. The event will also recognize past Mary Mahoney Award winners, whose leadership and excellence carry her legacy forward. This is a celebration of The Power of Nurses™ — past, present, and future.
