VNA's Workforce Issues Commission (WIC) works to develop strategies and opportunities to help address major issues facing registered nurses in VA, including workplace incivility and violence, healthy workplaces, staffing, and more. Additionally, the commission is actively engaged in answering the question “What makes a healthy workplace?” and establishing the following nursing priorities: effective partnerships with families and safety; healthy food and environment; self-care and resiliency. VNA is constantly asking what the membership needs. I can assure you that is not a rhetorical question. The answer is important and, in my experience, can usually be tied into workforce issues. By using the collective voice of the Board of Directors, chapter leaders, VNA member volunteers, and partnerships with stakeholders, all the work done by VNA is focused on meeting those needs. I have been fortunate to be invited to participate on committees, work groups, and even asked to testify in front of the General Assembly in efforts to address workforce issues. There is something inherently beautiful watching real change happen right before your eyes. Melissa Earley - Director-at-Large, Frontline Nurse - Member since 2016 I have had the opportunity to serve on the VNA Workforce Commission and the Lateral Incivility Workgroup this past year. This workgroup published an article in the VNA Today explaining lateral incivility and its effects on nurses, patients and organizations. The Workgroup also conducted a survey of VNA nurses to learn more about the perception of incivility in the workplace. The team is currently working on a follow-up article to this survey. The VNA recognizes the problem of incivility in our profession and is working to provide education to promote awareness and decrease the incidence of this behavior in nursing practice. Deborah B.
