The number of human Lyme disease cases in Virginia has increased substantially over the past several years, increasing from 357 reported cases in 2006 to a record 959 cases in 2007. The statewide Lyme disease count has remained high since that time, with 908 cases being reported in 2009. This downloadable resource helps nurses acquire essential knowledge and skills to appropriately respond to elder mistreatment. It is designed to prepare nurses to integrate nursing and forensic sciences into the care of vulnerable older adults who have been mistreated or are at high risk for mistreatment by trusted others.
The curriculum includes modules that cover topics such as:
♦Scope and Nature of Elder Mistreatment
♦Laws and Policies Related to Elder Mistreatment
♦Screening and Assessment for Elder Mistreatment
♦Forensic Evidence in Elder Mistreatment Cases
♦Documentation in Elder Mistreatment Cases
While no national, formalized elder abuse curriculum or national-level education programs to build nurses' basic forensic skills exist, IAFN and OVC hope this curriculum provides nurses the opportunity to improve their responses in elder mistreatment cases.

UPDATE on Sexual Volience:
In 2007, the Governor’s Commission on Sexual Violence recommended the development of a consistent healthcare response to sexual assault. Subsequently, a multidisciplinary team of dedicated healthcare providers, criminal justice professionals, sexual assault victim advocates, and survivors of sexual assault was convened to commence this effort and are pleased to announce that “Virginia’s Healthcare Response to Sexual Assault: Guidelines for the Acute Care of Adult and Post-Pubertal Adolescent Sexual Assault Patients” is now available at http://www.sexualanddomesticviolencevirginia.org/health.htm. These new guidelines replace “Virginia’s Hospital Protocol for the Treatment of Sexual Assault Victims” that was developed in 1990.
This new document incorporates recommendations from professionals across Virginia, as well as information from relevant state and national resources on the management of sexual assault patients and the collection of forensic evidence. Recognizing that not all communities or facilities can sustain forensic nursing programs, these guidelines were developed to assist all healthcare providers. It provides:
· Guidance and tools for clinicians providing care to sexual assault patients;
· Guidance for healthcare facilities developing or enhancing policies for the provision of medical and forensic services; and
· Guidance to communities working to establish a coordinated community response to sexual assault.
The guidelines include algorithms that outline key steps in responding to a sexual assault patient, including options regarding forensic exams, notification of law enforcement, and storage of forensic evidence. It is our hope that these guidelines and algorithms will be valuable and useful tools in your efforts to establish policies, procedures, and practices that promote a quality, consistent, and compassionate response to sexual assault patients in your community.
Women & Girls' Wellness Month (WGWM) was created, through a collaboration of health and women's groups brought together by Women's Health Virginia in 2002, as a time for organizations around the state to work together to highlight issues, programs, and services that address the concerns of girls and women of all ages. http://www.womenshealthvirginia.org/

We honor the legacy of Florence Nightingale and other nurses, midwives and healthcare workers of the past and present, who have shown how personal actions can make a world of difference.
